Marsh rested, Beardman picked for Sydney Trip

Exciting young quick Mahli Beardman could make his KFC BBL debut in Sydney after being selected in Perth Scorchers’ 14-player travelling squad.

The Scorchers, ranked fifth on the BBL|14 ladder, left this morning for critical contests against ladder leaders Sydney Sixers (SCG, Saturday 11 January) and second-placed Sydney Thunder (ENGIE Stadium, Monday 13 January).

Nineteen-year-old Beardman showcased his immense potential during Australia’s triumphant 2024 ICC Under-19 World Cup campaign, earning Player of the Final honours by removing three of India’s top four batters in Benoni.

Armed with raw pace and capable of swinging the new ball at speed, Beardman returns to the city where he made his WA debut in a One-Day Cup match against New South Wales last season.

English import Matthew Hurst rejoins the squad, offering versatility with the bat and another wicketkeeping option.

Star allrounder Mitch Marsh, meanwhile, has been rested and will instead spend time in Perth with his young family.

Marsh’s availability for the Scorchers’ final home game on 18 December versus Adelaide Strikers at Optus Stadium will be determined in due course.

Pace bowler Matthew Kelly (omitted) makes way for Beardman.

The stint interstate is Perth’s last of the regular season before they wrap up their home-and-away campaign against the Strikers.
