Star allrounder Ashton Agar has recommitted his future to Perth Scorchers, signing a three-year contract extension until the end of the KFC BBL|17 season.
Agar locked in for next three seasons
Called up for his Scorchers debut as a 20-year-old in BBL|03 as a highly touted allrounder with an ability to impact the game with both bat and ball, Agar is now well established among the competition’s most frugal bowlers.
The 31-year-old is one of the Scorchers longest-serving and most consistent players, representing the Club on 94 occasions over his 12-year career in Orange, taking 69 wickets.
The spin-bowling allrounder produced a career-best season during the Scorchers BBL|11 title-winning campaign, tallying 18 wickets at 21.88 and earning Team of the Tournament honours.
Agar’s allround contributions stand out among his peers, with his standing as the only player to feature in both the top ten wicket-takers and run-scorers in Perth Scorchers history. Agar’s agility and quickness makes him one of the Scorchers best-ever fielders, with his 50 catches currently a Club record.
His talents have also been recognised at International level, representing Australia 76 occasions across, Test, ODI and T20 formats including a memorable Test debut against England at Nottingham, where he struck 98 after coming in at number 11.
His contract extension follows recent announcements of multi-year deals for decorated skipper Ashton Turner (BBL|18), strike bowler Lance Morris (BBL|16), quick Jhye Richardson (BBL|16) and Aaron Hardie (BBL|17).
Following last night’s victory over the Strikers, the Scorchers now sit in fourth place heading into final home and away fixture of the season, between the Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground this afternoon.
A Hurricanes victory will see the Scorchers make Finals, and travel to Sydney to take on Sydney Thunder at Engie Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Reflecting on recommitting to the Scorchers, Agar said:
“Perth is my home. I moved here from Melbourne when I was 18 and I’ve never looked back.
“To be at the Scorchers for another three years means the world to me.
“It means I’m all in at one Club and I’m playing with my best mates, in front of the greatest fans in Australia, it’s huge.
“The Members and fans are everything. There can be some nervous energy pre-game and then you get out there at Optus Stadium and when the crowd roars, you feel 20-foot tall and it’s the best feeling ever.”
